Welcome to East Haven, CTThe town of East Haven is located near New Haven, Connecticut, along the state’s Atlantic shore, just 35 miles from Hartford and 82 miles from New York City. With a history that goes back farther than that of the United States itself, East Haven humbly began as a New Haven Colony parish named East Farms, which found its colonial fame in 1655 as the site of the third New England ironworks. Nicknamed “Ironworks Village,” East Farms’ earliest residents struggled to become a town separate from New Haven, and petitioned the Connecticut Colony twice before being granted township in 1707. Unfortunately, due to land issues and a quarrel with Governor Gordon Saltonstall, East Haven’s township status was rescinded shortly thereafter and wouldn’t be reinstated until 1785, after the American Revolution. Much of East Haven’s initial growth took place in the 18th century, with the construction of the first public school building in 1706 and the Old Stone (Congregational) Church in 1772-4, which still stands today as one of the town’s treasured historic icons.
