Attractions in East Haven, CTToday East Haven boasts a population of over 30,000 people, and attracts new residents every day due to its central New England location and long list of attractions. East Haven is a short drive or flight to many major cities, including Hartford, Philadelphia, New York, Providence, and Boston—which makes all of these places perfect candidates for day trips or weekend getaways. Close to home, East Haven residents have an abundance of things to see and do in the greater New Haven area, including everything from shopping and dining at the city’s trendy Chapel Street district to playing a game of ultimate Frisbee on the historic New Haven Green. New Haven is home to Yale University, which supplies the community with wonderful cultural and historic attractions, such as the Yale Center for British Art, the Yale University Art Gallery, the Yale Repertory Theatre, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, which houses one of the world’s few remaining Gutenberg Bibles. East Haven theater-goers are never without entertainment at the region’s many performance arts venues, including the New Haven Shubert and Long Wharf theaters, as well as the Chevrolet Theater and Paul Mellon Arts Center in nearby Wallingford. Overall, New Haven and East Haven have a very active arts community that takes part in annual festivals and events, such as the unique two-week-long International Festival of Arts and Ideas and the Citywide Open Studios event, during which local artists open up their studios to the public.
When East Haven residents aren’t exhibiting a touch of class at upscale shopping districts, theaters, and art galleries, they have plenty of opportunity to get rowdy at the area’s local sporting events, recreational facilities, city parks and state parks. New Haven is home to the professional Pilot Pen International Tennis Tournament and New Haven County Cutters Baseball, as well as five universities with athletics, the most famous being the Yale Bulldogs. East Haven residents can get acquainted with the great outdoors in greater New Haven’s many parks and recreation areas, such as the scenic East Rock Park, offering views of the city of New Haven, Yale University, and Long Island Sound, and the historic Lighthouse Point Park, which offers a restored 1920’s carousel, a public beach and playing fields overlooking the New Haven Harbor. Also, Hamden and New Haven share the West Rock Ridge State Park, which is located 627 feet above sea level and provides visitors with a wide range of recreation, including boating and fishing, hiking and mountain biking.
