Welcome to Exeter, NHThe character of Exeter, New Hampshire, like so many New England towns, has been shaped by its natural surroundings. The town, strategically located on the tidal Swampscott River and the freshwater Exeter River has been the home to industries of yesteryear like ship building, agriculture and commercial trading. No longer commercially utilized the rivers are home to crew teams, boaters and fisherman of all kinds, as well as thousands of migratory birds.
Exeter was one of the four towns in the original Colony, and served as a military headquarters before and during the Revolutionary War. Exeter is also home to Phillips Exeter Academy. Founded in 1871 by John Phillips, the school has a tradition of academic excellence. The academy enriches the community in many ways with theatre, music, art exhibits and athletics, as well as a long and fascinating history.
Today Exeter is considered one of the most desirable places to live in the Seacoast Region. It has a major hospital and a 14,000 square foot public library that serves 50,000 area residents. Exeter itself has a population of nearly 15,000. The town center is an historic, hospitable downtown of brick faced buildings, featuring unique places to eat, specialty shops, lovely riverside parks and the American Independence Museum.
There are two public elementary schools, a regional middle school and a brand new high school. It is home to the Seacoast School of Technology, and there are plans to build a YMCA in town. Housing is diverse offering properties in a broad range of value. In short Exeter is a vibrant community, rich in history and character, and a wonderful place to call home. | More Local Area InformationDurham housing offers many options for residents, from condos to luxury waterfront properties.
