A charming and historic village on the Grand Barrier Island of Gasparilla, Boca Grande is located midway between Sarasota and Ft. Myers. It sits along Charlotte Harbor and serves as one of the deepest natural ports in all of Florida.
The history of the island goes back over 7,000 years to the Calusa tribe, which made the area the center of their empire. They subsisted on hunting and fishing, making great use of the bountiful natural resources. Following the Calusa was an array of residents in the area, including Cuban and Spanish fisherman, as well as the infamous pirate Jose Gaspar for whom the island was named.
As wealthy American and European sportsmen made their way to the area, the secret was out about a major draw that to this day brings people from all over the world to Boca Grande: Tarpon fishing. There are a number of activities in the area, but Tarpon fishing has become a staple for both the commercial as well as the recreational lives of residents and visitors. Every year in July, the island hosts the “World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament.” There are also several seafood festivals to coincide with the seasons.
Along with the fabulous weather and fishing, the village is also home to an eclectic art community and various galleries that happily accept visitors for tours or purchases. Restaurants feature the freshest in local catches and the boutiques have exclusive items available. From holiday boat parades to the annual FamilyFest, Boca Grande is the perfect place for anyone interested in truly enjoying a better quality of life.
Living in Boca Grande is a truly unique experience. As the village keeps a very limited number of residents, it is a very exclusive location. Many say it is THE address to have in Southwest Florida. Whether you are looking for a single-family home or beachfront condominium, there is no other place quite like Boca Grande on Gasparilla.
