Volusia County’s southwestern border town straddles busy Highway 17/92 and stretches from the peaceful St. Johns River bank to booming Deltona. DeBary’s near neighbor, Enterprise, was one of the first central Florida settlements and is readily accessible via the river. When flamboyant Frederick DeBary chose the locale for settlement he naturally named it after himself. As befitting the county’s largest citrus grower he caused DeBary Hall to be designed and built. This is an impressive antebellum mansion designed for entertainment in the grand tradition. It even contained the first swimming pool in Volusia County.
The town of DeBary experienced some growth as a spillover from Deltona but the 1980s saw development in the form of upscale “country club” settings which enhanced the community’s tone.
With its lakeside state park, Gemini Springs, its recreational access to the St. Johns River at Highbanks and its fine homes along pristine fairways, DeBary plans to maintain its small-town stature despite continuing growth.
