The City of Fort Myers is the historical and governmental hub of Lee County. It served as one of the first bases of operations during the Seminole Indian Wars and was named in honor of Colonel Abraham C. Myers. The actual fort was abandoned in 1858 and reoccupied for a short period of time during the Civil War before it was disassembled and used to construct the first buildings of what would become downtown Fort Myers. By 1885 Fort Myers was bustling with industry and a population of about 350. It was then that Thomas Edison stopped in for a visit and decided to build his laboratory and winter home on the banks of the Caloosahatchee River.
Today the city is an interesting blend of young and old. Historic sites such as Edison’s home and his neighbor Henry Ford’s home are open to visitors. Extensive renovation of Fort Myers’ historic waterfront downtown is underway, with new restaurants, nightclubs, condominiums, and artistic venues providing energy and growth. Throughout the year, Southwest Florida residents and visitors enjoy cultural events overlooking the Caloosahatchee River at Centennial Park and the Yacht Basin. Also in Fort Myers you will find Lee County’s largest cultural facility, the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall. For sports enthusiasts, the Minnesota Twins do their spring training at the Lee County Sports Complex. The Boston Red Sox also do their spring training at the City of Palms in Fort Myers. While there has been extensive change, Fort Myers still retains its charm for future generations to enjoy.
