Neighborhoods in Jacksonville, FL

Today, nearly 54,000 make up the First Coast’s military population, including families of active-duty personnel and civilians employed by the Navy bases. In addition to active military and civilian employees, over 76,000 military retirees and their families proudly call the First Coast home.

Arlington is home to the Timucuan Nature Preserve and the Fort Caroline National Memorial – it is one of the oldest areas in the U.S. to first be inhabited by European settlers. Jacksonville University also makes its home here. This established neighborhood, developed in the 1950-60’s, is surrounded by the St. Johns River to the west. Arlington is home to several major shopping centers.

The Beaches, including Mayport, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, stretch along the Atlantic Ocean from the northernmost portions of Jacksonville down to Ponte Vedra Beach in St. Johns County. “The Beaches” as city folks generally refer to them are known for their fine eateries, nightlife and easy going atmosphere.

Mayport is home to Mayport Naval Station, offers much affordable housing, which caters to military personnel and civilians who work at the base. A historic fishing village, Mayport is still an active fishing community offering some of the best seafood in the area.

Downtown: is experiencing its own revitalization, and is even experiencing its own upscale residential growth, something’s unheard of just a few decades ago. Several high-rise condos, loft and apartment buildings exist or are currently under construction. Popular for a stroll is the Riverwalk on both sides of the St. Johns.

Mandarin, named for its once plentiful orchards of Mandarin oranges, continues to be one of the more heavily populated areas in Jacksonville. Although it’s a 35-45 minute drive to downtown, it still has a peaceful sense as the area is full of majestic oak trees, meandering roads and exquisite waterfront hones.

North Jacksonville: is where the Jacksonville International Airport is located, along with Anheuser-Busch Brewery and the Jacksonville Zoological Gardens. The area is just minutes from established shopping and entertainment in Arlington or a short ferry ride to the village of Mayport.

Riverside & Avondale: are on the west side of the St. John River, just minutes from Downtown. One of the area’s oldest residential neighborhood, you will find million dollar estates a block away from priced to sell renovation candidates. A beautiful and charming area with many old trees and several large parks.
