This jewel of a town captures the attention of Hollywood producers, who choose to set their films against Micanopy’s picturesque backdrop of moss-draped oaks and scenic streets. Twelve miles south of Gainesville, Micanopy was first established as a trading post in 1821. With agricultural prosperity, the town grew into a community of fine homes, schools and a popular tourist destination. Visitors browse shops selling antiques, old books, ceramics, stained glass and other crafts here, and stay in one of several lovely bed and breakfast inns. As the oldest inland settlement in Florida, most of Micanopy’s buildings are on the National Historic Register. In autumn, visitors converge on the area to enjoy the Micanopy Fall Harvest Festival. For nearly three decades, thousands have come to the festival to enjoy the works of artisans, craftsmen and musicians, both from local areas and the southeast.
