Palm Beach is a town and barrier island located along the Atlantic Coast of Florida, approximately 65 miles north of Miami. Legend has it that the town received its name when in 1878, a shipwreck named "Providencia" washed ashore, containing a load of coconuts. Early settlers of the island planted the wayward cargo, hoping to sprout a commercial coconut industry. Their plans did not come to fruition, but the settlers would soon see some wealth when Henry M. Flagler, rich developer and owner of the Florida East Coast Railway, began to buy up many acres on the island with the intent of turning it into a community set within a tropical paradise. By 1911, the town of Palm Beach was incorporated.
Development in the early days of Palm Beach was carefully planned so as not to destroy the stunning natural beauty of the island. Today, the residents and town officials continue to care for and appreciate the island, preserving a quality of life that is unparalleled. Palm Beach currently has approximately 10,000 year-round residents, with a seasonal population that swells to 30,000 in the winter months. Along with a lush tropical landscape and amazing ocean views, Palm Beach offers its residents a myriad of pastimes, including world-class shopping on Worth Avenue or Royal Poinciana Way, casual and fine dining at delectable bistros, cafés, and ristorantes, or a number of historical and cultural attractions that peak every interest. Residents of Palm Beach also have access to the attractions on the mainland; both the cities of West Palm Beach and Lake Worth are just a quick jump over the Intracoastal Waterway via any of the three primary bridges. In regards to outdoor recreation, Palm Beach is a literal playground for those who love fun in the sun. In addition to the island's sandy tropical beaches that are perfect for everything from boating and swimming to shell searching and sunning, Palm Beach maintains the Phipps Ocean Park and the Bradley Park, both with lush grassy lawns and shady pavilions. Palm Beach offers recreation centers and tennis courts, and the acclaimed Town of Palm Beach Golf Course boasts an 18-hole par 3 layout with four of the holes directly on the Atlantic Ocean. And for avid cyclists, Palm Beach has three scenic bike paths, ranging in length from 1.5 to 5 miles.
