The History of Plantation, FLThe city of Plantation, FL was the conception of a Missouri man named Frederick C. Peters, who made several agricultural achievements in his life, including the introduction of the Florida Red Potatoes and the discovery of “Plantation Pride”—an inexpensive and nutritious livestock feed that is used worldwide, and has been instrumental in reducing starvation. Peters arrived in Miami-Dade County in 1931 looking for large tracts of undeveloped land on which he could graze Polled Herefords cattle. Peters stumbled upon the largely uninhabited and wild Plantation region and discovered it possessed a natural subterranean irrigation system, and had access to the Broward County canal system, making the soil perfect for growing crops and grass. Taking advantage of the cheap land available after World War II, Peters purchased 10,000 acres for just $250,000.
Peters hired Rusell T. Pancoast to help devise a master plan for the city of Plantation, which received its name from city landowners who referred to their holdings as “plantations.” Development began in the mid-1940s and despite the devastation of two hurricanes in 1947, the town survived and began to grow steadily, boasting 40 homes, a country store, and even the Plantation Country Club by the early 1950s. At this time, Plantation was governed by its homeowner’s association, and didn’t form an official council until the community incorporated in 1953. On Plantation’s first day as a city, it had a population of less than 500 and a budget of only $1,288.
