Living in Fort Pierce, FL

Welcome to the small, historic city of Fort Pierce, Florida! Fort Pierce is so named after the actual fort that was located here on the western bank of the Indian River just north of downtown. The remains of the fort are still there today and visitors are free to walk the ruins and trace the walls of the actual fort.

For nearly as long as it was known as Fort Pierce, this little historic town was also nick-named “The Sunrise City”. This is due to the spectacular sunrise views that are to be seen from the beaches or over the Indian River. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that so many artists chose to reside in Fort Pierce.

Fort Pierce is the oldest city in St. Lucie County and is the county seat. As a recipient of the “Main Street USA federal grant, the downtown area of the city has undergone massive renovation, and the renovations are still underway. One of the major attractions of the downtown area is the Sunrise Theater; a restored theater from the 1920’s which is actively in use all year long.

In fact the entire downtown area is fairly “buzzing” every night and day of the week! Downtown features include many fine restaurants, several art galleries (Ft. Pierce is the home of A.E. “Beanie” Bacchus) and our Waterfront Park, where festivals and monthly activities are held all year long!

The Fort Pierce Inlet is always a hub of activity. Fishing, both commercial and pleasure, is a huge industry and the daily catch is always plentiful! For the sport fisherman, there is no place quite like Fort Pierce! Annual fishing contests are located here and the marinas are busy all year long!

Perhaps the favorite Fort Pierce locations are North and South Hutchinson Islands. Hutchinson Island is a barrier island just across the lovely Indian River from the mainland. The two islands are separated only by the Fort Pierce Inlet and perhaps that is why they are so often referred to in the singular. These two islands yield 21 miles of pristine beaches and much of the area are federally protected bird and wildlife sanctuaries. You can really get “back to nature” in this less trafficked area of the east coast of Florida!

So if you’re ready to come see Florida as Florida was originally meant to be seen, please make plans to visit Fort Pierce and the greater St. Lucie County area. We know you will be pleased that you chose to do so!
