Tampa, Florida started to become a real city in the 1880’s with the arrival of Henry B. Plant’s railroad and Vincente Ybor’s cigar making prowess. Downtown Tampa, Florida sits on the site of the original settlement of Ft. Brooke where the Hillsborough River meets the top of Tampa Bay. The location was chosen by Col. George Mercer Brooke, the Fort’s 1st Commander and namesake. The river, County and numerous other things were named for Lord Willis Hills, King Georges’s Secretary of State to the Colonies. The end of the Revolutionary War cost him his job, but his name lives on.
Those humble beginnings have grown to become known as Tampa Bay, also home to the cities’ of Clearwater, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs and the world famous Pinellas County beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. Along with the cultural delights of the Florida Orchestra and the world class Performing Arts Center, the Bay area is home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL), and the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (MLB). Whether for business or pleasure travel our highly regarded Tampa International Airport is regularly ranked among the finest in the world. Throw in a vibrant and diverse economy, the 2nd largest University in Florida (USF), the always present sunshine and blue skies and you have one great place to live. With housing options ranging from lofts & high-rise condo’s to horse ranches, master planned communities and beach cottages, Tampa Bay has relatively affordable housing for almost everyone.
Tampa Bay is as bold as the annual Gasparilla Pirate Invasion & Parade with 500,000 watching and participating, as peaceful as a canoe trip on the Hillsborough River or a day at the beach. Big enough to be the host of four Super Bowls, a Stanley Cup Championship, a Final Four, the Outback Bowl, ACC Championship and numerous PGA Golf Tournaments. Tampa is culturally active enough to have four major museums opening or under construction in 2009 and performing arts venues throughout the Bay area.
