About Fleetwood, NC

Fleetwood is the southern most “town” in Ashe County, NC. Like many rural areas, Fleetwood is designated by a post office and not much else – it is a combination of several townships within Ashe County, and is known because the South Fork of the New River runs through the area, and because it serves as a bedroom community for folks who work in Boone and Wilkesboro. Because of its location, Fleetwood is home to many vacation properties as it is the closest mountain area for many of North Carolina cities like Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. Folks from Winston-Salem can be in Fleetwood in less than 90 minutes – a definite plus for quick weekends away. Many visitors enjoy the level bicycling available along the New River from Fleetwood to Todd (where you can rent bicycles). The 20 mile round trip from the Todd Mercantile and General Store to the Fleetwood Post Office and back is an easy and pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Tubing and canoeing on this stretch of river is also very popular.
