Find Paradise in Folly Beach, SC

When the early settlers entered Charleston harbor they passed Folly Island’s tree lined northern coast. They named this island paradise Folly, which from the Old English meant clump of trees or thicket. They also encountered the Bohicket tribe of Native Americans who lived there in the1600s. The island was also at times called Coffin Land or Coffin Island on some historical maps because it was a drop off point for sick or infirmed passengers who were not allowed to enter the City of Charleston.

George Gershwin, the famous composer, was staying on Folly Beach in 1934 when he wrote the now famous folk opera “Porgy and Bess.” Gershwin based his colorful story on the character “Porgy” created by native Charlestonian, DuBose Heyward. “Porgy and Bess” has gone on to be one of the world’s best loved operas and continues to play to grateful audiences around the globe.

Twenty years ago, Hugo the “hurricane of the century” in September of 1989 did a great deal of damage to the island and practically devastated the beaches. Homes were rebuilt according to the newer building codes, the beaches were renourished and today Folly Beach is home to surfers, sun worshippers and tourists galore. You’ll find quaint restaurants serving gourmet quality food, souvenir shops, a fabulous fishing pier and the historic Morris Island Lighthouse. Folly Beach is a “must see- must visit” place just a short drive from the historic City of Charleston, SC.
