Welcome to Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN

Fort Benjamin Harrison is located in Marion County, Indiana, approximately 14 miles northeast of downtown Indianapolis. Neither a town or a city, Fort Benjamin Harrison was once a military base that has since been decommissioned and is now the site of several residential neighborhoods, an 18-hole golf course, and a beautiful state park. Fort Harrison was originally established in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, who named it in honor of former President Benjamin Harrison—a longtime resident of Indianapolis. With its brick barracks, headquarters, officer’s houses, and hospital, the fort was heavily used throughout WWI and WWII as a center for military education and training, soldier support, and troop reception. During WWII, the base was the largest reception base in the U.S., and also maintained a POW camp. Throughout its service, Fort Harrison was primarily used by the U.S. Army, although it functioned as Benjamin Harrison Air Force Base from 1948 to 1950. Following the Cold War, the fort was shut down due to military downsizing, and in 1995, the U.S. Department of the Interior gave 1,700 acres to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to be maintained as the Fort Harrison State Park.
