New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. are all popular United States vacation destinations due to the many attractions found in these cities. One up-and-coming town to add to this list is Atlanta, the largest city in Georgia. Although it may not spring to mind as a first choice for a vacation destination, the historic past of Georgia's capital makes it one of America's gems for a culturally diverse trip or even a place of residence.

Perhaps two of the most important sides of Atlanta are its involvement with both the Civil War and the civil rights movement. All three attractions offer visitors a glimpse into the city's past and explain how these hardships transformed the city into what it is today.

In addition, depending on the time of year, many festivals and parades roll through Atlanta, including a Gay Pride Parade, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, and the Georgia Renaissance Festival.

Compared to other regions throughout the United States, Atlanta experiences relatively cool summers. You may have heard the nickname "Hotlanta" used to refer to the city, but this usually applies only to its leading status within the area rather than its climate. This ensures that if you're visiting Atlanta mid-year, or living within the city year round, your summer should be cool, comfortable, and full of interesting things to see and enjoy.
