About Dawson County, GAIn the foothills of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, you’ll discover Dawson County. Seemingly secluded and far from the bright lights and big city, it is only 48 miles north of Atlanta via Interstate 400. These were the forests where the Cherokee Indians lived and hunted and gave the name Amicalola (meaning tumbling waters) to the spectacular 729-foot waterfalls which are the highest in Georgia. The county also claims 49 miles of shoreline on picturesque Lake Lanier, which is its southeastern boundary. Dawsonville is the county seat and the central community in this rural county.
Homeowners have much to choose from in this area. Whether your taste leads you down a long winding country road, a lake home, a subdivision with a variety of amenities, or a mountainous resort community such as Big Canoe, you’re sure to find the perfect place to call home in Dawson County.
The trailhead for the Appalachian Trail, the famous hiking trail to Maine, begins in Dawson County.
