The beautiful Lake Sidney Lanier is a reservoir located in Georgia’s northern Blue Ridge Mountains, just 55 miles northeast of Atlanta. Created in the 1950’s upon the completion of the Buford Dam on the Chattahoochee River, Lake Lanier was given its name in honor of the 19th century Georgian poet Sidney Clopton Lanier, who penned the poem “Song of the Chattahoochee” (1887) to capture in words his love of the region and its natural splendor. Today Lake Lanier is loved by Georgians and visitors from afar for its 38,000 acres of water and more than 540 miles of shoreline that offer gorgeous scenery and unlimited recreation.
Every year more than 7.5 million people visit Lake Lanier for exhilarating boating sports, jetskiing, fishing the lake’s world-renowned striped bass, and other outdoor activities such as horseback riding, hiking, and camping. Lake Lanier has ten marinas for boaters’ convenience, including the AquaLand Marina (one of the largest freshwater marinas in the world) located close to the town of Flowery Branch. Adding luxury and sophistication to this adventuresome paradise is the Lake Lanier Islands Resort, which offers a long list of amenities to please both visitors and residents of Lake Lanier—from calming morning spa treatments to rowdy afternoons with the kids at the Beach & Water Park. And for golf lovers, golfing at Lake Lanier is both challenging and relaxing at the Resort’s two championship courses—the PineIsle Golf Club and the Emerald Pointe Golf Club. Both courses sit gracefully on Lake Lanier’s beautiful rolling hills and sparkling inlets, with 21 holes right on the lake.
