Although considerably smaller in stature to the city of Savannah, the city of Port Wentworth shares with Savannah a rich history, a convenience of location, and an established industry base, but more importantly offers a unique variety of residential options for those seeking a more small- town America feel!
Much like the city of Savannah, Port Wentworth has played an important part of American history since the first European settled here in the early 1700’s. It was at Mulberry Grove Plantation in 1793 that Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. An active plantation up until 1864, it was destroyed by General William T. Sherman on his march through Georgia. Although the plantation is not currently open to the public, the Mulberry Grove Foundation is working diligently to preserve the plantation, to build the Eli Whitney Center, to develop educational and recreational opportunities, and to preserve the wetlands and wildlife habitats for generations to come.
With a population just over 3,000, today’s Port Wentworth has ideal logistics. It is nestled between the Savannah Ports, Interstate 95 (I-95 north/south), Interstate 16 (I-16 east/west), four major railroads, and the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport next door. Port Wentworth also hosts industries like Imperial Sugar (Dixie Crystal), and a variety of retailers both large and small.
Port Wentworth is popular to home owners not only because of its close proximity to Savannah but also due to its small-town USA flavor, lower property taxes and its affordability. There are nearly 1,700 homes in Port Wentworth ranging from traditional Bungalows in the older portion of the town to new developments like the Villages at Rice Hope, The Cove at Newport, Lakeshore, Rice Creek and the Rice Hope Plantation. These homes range from townhouses to single family starting in the mid $100,000’s.
