Much like the city of Savannah, Port Wentworth has played an important part of American history since the first European settled here in the early 1700’s. It was at Mulberry Grove Plantation in 1793 that Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. An active plantation up until 1864, it was destroyed by General William T. Sherman on his march through Georgia. It is nestled between the Savannah Ports, Interstate 95 (I-95 north/south), Interstate 16 (I-16 east/west), four major railroads, and the Savannah/Hilton Head Airport next door. Port Wentworth also hosts industries like Imperial Sugar (Dixie Crystal), and a variety of retailers both large and small.
