Welcome to Harrisonburg, Virginia

The City of Harrisonburg and County of Rockingham are located in the northern portion of the Commonwealth of Virginia and offer a fascinating history as well as a lovely atmosphere for residents and tourists of all kinds to enjoy.

For the history buffs of the world, putting Virginia together with the Civil War is beyond obvious. But for those who haven't studied history at great length may not be aware of the significance this state, also known as one of the original 13, played in America's domestic fight for freedom. And furthermore both Harrisonburg and Rockingham County were popular places during this time of battle. Located in the middle of the valley where the confederates housed their supplies as well as portions of their army, the Union troops would march through these Virginian towns often and actual battles occurred here as well. In fact the entire county was burned down during the 13-day catastrophe initiated by Union General Philip Sheridan, commonly known in history as “The Burning.”

Centuries later locals and visitors can observe the milestones of the Civil War and other historical time periods through the extensive collection of museums and landmarks available in Rockingham County and the City of Harrisonburg. On the outdoor front enjoy days of hiking throughout the Shenandoah Valley as well as bicycling, swimming, horseback-riding and more. Enjoy a day at the shops on occasion at local malls like Harrisonburg Crossing and the Valley Mall, and specialty places like the Dayton Farmer's Market and the Shoppes at Mauzy.

Which brings us to food and entertainment! Harrisonburg offers a wide array nice dining – take pleasure in an evening of local barbecue or a fresh steak. After that you can catch a live show at any of Rockingham County's and Harrisonburg's local venues like the Court Square Theater, or perhaps enjoy one of the many festivals held in these areas year round like the Blue Ridge Theater Festival, Dayton Days or ValleyFest.

Whatever your particular interest may be, you'll find a way to satisfy it here in this friendly and celebrated community!
