MLS, or Multiple Listing Service, is one of the two most important developments in real estate. An MLS is a database that allows a REALTOR® representing a home for sale to provide information about the property with any REALTORS® who might represent potential buyers. Before the advent of this database, buyers had to physically travel to each separate real estate office to view the properties represented by that office. Now, any one office can provide information about the properties represented by all other offices in the area.

There is no one central Multiple Listing Service for the United States. Each region or large city has its own MLS. In 2005 there were about 800 such databases in the U.S. The largest of these is the MLSNI, Multiple Listing Service of Northern Illinois. This MLS includes Northbrook and Cook County and has more than 45,000 active members.

The other amazing tool at the service of today's home buyer is the Internet. The MLS made it possible to get printed information about all the homes for sale in the area by visiting one REALTOR®'s office--though you still had to be in that area.
