Topiaries, historic churches and two nearby riverboats—the Argosy in Lawrenceburg and Grand Victoria in Rising Sun— are some of the attractions in Aurora, IN. Its historic district includes sites such as the First Evangelical United Church of Christ (1898), First Presbyterian (1826) and St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception (1849). It has a one-and-a half-mile walking & running trail in landscaped Lesko Park, which is popular with visitors and residents. The community celebrates with parades and festivals, such as the yearly Farmers’ Fair and Firecracker Craft Show. There’s a regatta in August. Its Hillforest Mansion, a beautifully restored Victorian home overlooking the Ohio River, is a National Historic Landmark and is open for tours. In recent years, Aurora has done some renovation of its city hall buildings (dating 1870–1886); some streetscaping and rehabilitation of Conwell Street. Along with the other Southeastern Indiana communities, Aurora has become increasingly popular with commuters seeking country living. This pretty river town was settled in 1796 and named “Aurora” by Judge Jesse Lynch Holman in 1819. The average home price in Aurora, IN is $113,000 (July 2008). The approximate area of Aurora, Indiana is 2.8 square miles, with a population of 3,965. If you plan on moving with young children, the local school district consists of the South Dearborn Community Schools.
