Known as the “Racing Capital of the World”, Speedway, Indiana is a separate town within Marion County. However, despite the town being only 7 miles from the center of The Circle City, it still maintains independence with its own police and fire departments, Town Hall, public library, utilities departments, and school system. Unlike many of Indianapolis' surrounding communities, Speedway has a growing number of single residents and many of its homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s.
The town's very first 500-Mile Race took place in 1911 and since then the Brickyard 400 and the United States Grand Prix have been added to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's list of lucrative events. Today, the 2.5-mile rectangular track is built on over 500 acres of ground and is the largest, permanent-seating sports venue in the world. The Speedway Museum and Hall of Fame houses memorabilia from over a half century of 500-Mile Race history. In addition to racing, Speedway has several golf courses, a country club, community centers, tennis courts and racquet clubs.
