Welcome to Elkhart, INLocated in the heart of Amish Country, Elkhart, Indiana, is the birth place of Alka Seltzer and claims to have produced more patents than any other city, in the state, except Indianapolis.
The birth of Elkhart took place in 1931 when Dr. Havilah Beardsley purchased a plot of land from a half-French, half-Native American Potawatomi Chef. By 2006, the estimated population had grown to approximately 52,748. By the early 20th century the town’s manufacturing industry began to take off with the production of trailers and other products. After World War II, Elkhart became known as “The Trailer Capital of the World.” Today Elkhart is a part of the larger Elkhart County area known as “The RV Capital of the World.” In addition to recreational vehicles, Elkhart is also known for its production of quality manufactured homes, musical instruments, electrical components and pharmaceuticals.
Annual events, such as the Elkhart Air Show and the three-day Elkhart Jazz Festival, provide family time and entertainment for everyone. The vintage 20th century-style trolley-like bus—Interurban Trolley— provides an interesting alternative form of transportation through Elkhart, Goshen, Oseceola and Mishawaka. The recently constructed Farmer’s Market boasts 51,452 square feet in its combined two stories, and is the largest wood-peg structure in the world.
