With an estimated population of 31,882 in 2006, Goshen, Indiana, is the county seat of Elkhart County. The neighborly, service-oriented environment, affordable housing market and country setting make this city an ideal place to reside. Manufacturing of recreational vehicles and accessories dominates the local economy. Another big industry in Goshen is farming since it is a city containing wide expanses of farmland.
Goshen is considered the center of the Northern Indiana Amish Country and takes pride in its local Amish heritage. A covered stable is provided at the south side Wal-Mart for its frequent Amish visitors. Horse-drawn buggies can be seen trotting down the streets and passersby will take note of the well-groomed Amish homesteads and farmlands. Amish shops and restaurants draw tourists from across the nation.
In the historic downtown, there are quaint little shops, boutiques and cafés. The Old Bag Factory, for example, consists of several unique shops that sell creative gifts and items. In addition to this, magnificent architecture exists in the Victorian-style homes and 20th-century buildings. Another major attraction for tourists is the Elkhart County 4-H Fair hosted in Goshen, which is the second largest county fair in the nation.
