Historic Isle of Hope, Georgia

Isle of Hope is a charming historic neighborhood in Savannah, Georgia. Isle of Hope was discovered by one of General Oglethorpe’s surveyors in 1733 named Noble Jones, but it wasn’t until Yellow Fever epidemics plagued the city that Savannahians started coming to Isle of Hope to escape the illness. There are still a number of homes standing from the antebellum period. The historic areas are some of the most charming in all of the city. Isle of Hope is home of the famous Bluff Drive, one of the most beautiful streets in Savannah, many homes on this street overlook the Intercoastal Waterway.

Isle of Hope boasts a sense of community that has been long forgotten in many places. There is only one commercial establishment on the island- the Isle of Hope Marina. The kids in the neighborhood ride their bikes to the marina on warm summer afternoons to buy popsicles and sodas. Parents still let their children play outside in the neighborhood in the evenings, and they all know they must be home by dusk. Many lazy afternoons are spent crabbing on the docks behind the lovely, peaceful homes.

Even though it is only fifteen minutes from Historic Downtown Savannah, once you cross the bridge over the Intercoastal Waterway, you will feel like you are miles and miles away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Savannah.
