About Jefferson, NCAs the county seat, Jefferson is the political heart of Ashe County, NC, home to a wonderful new courthouse, as well as the historic courthouse being restored and converted to a museum. Jefferson has just over 1000 residents, with a small downtown home to several restaurants, shops and a few churches. Ashe Memorial Hospital is located in Jefferson, which in addition to being an award winning rural hospital, also offers a fitness center complete with pool. Nearby you’ll find Jefferson Landing, a private, gated golf community.
Jefferson and West Jefferson, though two separate incorporated towns, really function as one large town. The area has been referred to by one magazine as “the best kept secret for retirement”.
