Glasgow is located in Barren County and lies midway between Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY. The county was founded in 1798 and named for the meadowlands, or “barrens,” found here. The city was named for its sister city in Scotland and was established one year later in 1799. The first annual Glasgow Highland Games was in 1986 to celebrate the community’s Celtic heritage.
Barren County and Edmonson County cover Mammoth Cave National Park with over 300 miles of mapped passageways and includes the world’s longest cave. People come here from all across the country and abroad to tour these caves.
Glasgow is a growing community with a low crime rate. It offers both independent and public school systems as well as one private Christian school. Downtown squares activities include arts and crafts festivals several times a year.
Barren County was named the “Best Place to Live in Rural America” by The Progressive Farmer Magazine.
Barren River Lake mostly lies in Barren County and occupies parts of Allen and Monroe Counties as well. It is a man-made lake made from the Barren River and has 140 miles of shoreline. There are a large number of water sports and fishing that takes place throughout the year.
