Southgate, KY – A Small Residential CommunityA local politician Albert S. Berry named the community after a wealthy landowner Richard Southgate in the late 1800s. In the 1930s, Southgate was part of the gambling and dinner club business of Newport (called “Sin City”). In 1936, a convicted moonshiner, Peter Schmidt, opened the Beverly Hills Supper Club, which was devastated by fire—killing 161 patrons on Memorial Day 1977. Today, Southgate is a small residential community offering a selection of modestly priced, older, traditional homes. There are summer concerts here featuring rock bands, jazz, music for kids and a magician; also block parties and church festivals. There are also tennis courts located next to the Southgate Optimist Club playground, near the Southgate Public School. St. Therese Church & School, which has recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, is here.
