Lake Norman Region, North Carolina

Located just 20 miles north of “Center City Charlotte”, the Lake Norman region of North Carolina consists of four counties surrounding the largest man-made lake in the state.

Boasting more than 550 miles of shoreline, Lake Norman is known as the “Inland Sea”. It was formed in the 1960’s when Duke Power dammed the Catawba River to create a hydro and nuclear power plant. At that time, Lake Norman became a weekend retreat for Charlotteans.

Today, Lake Norman is home to mostly primary residents. Communities of all price points have spread across the region providing a broad array of housing options. Multi-million dollar lakefront mansions dot the pristine shoreline, sometimes adjoining a small lake house from the 1960’s. Within the Lake Norman region, large and small communities offering a variety of amenities can be found. Golf course communities are abundant, creating a resort-like feel throughout the area.

Due to its proximity to Charlotte and Winston-Salem, the area houses many commuters to both major cities. Serviced by Interstates 77 and 40, travel in and around the area is easy. Several major state roads intersect throughout the region, making local travel convenient as well.

Shopping has become plentiful, as nearby Concord Mills, Northlake Mall and South Park Mall are within easy driving distance. Several of the local cities have added boutique centers, including the heralded Birkdale in Huntersville. Each community is home to local shopping, restaurants and other retail centers providing all of the residents needs.

Newcomers will find the area welcoming, as many residents are transplants from other areas of the country. The weather is, well, perfect in a word. A brief winter snow might cover the ground for a few hours, while the balance of the year is typically sunny and pleasant.
