Living in Lawrence, KS

Lawrence, Kansas has a growing population of around 90,000 residents, and boasts a number of accolades for its distinctive culture and historic atmosphere. The U.S. National Trust for Historic Preservation included the city among its list of “Dozen Most Distinctive Destinations,” and in 2007, U.S. News and World Report designated Lawrence as one of the nation’s best places to retire—particularly high praise for a city with winter days that go below freezing. Overall, Lawrence has qualities that people of all ages are looking for in a city, from arts and entertainment to education to sports and seasonal outdoor recreation. Downtown Lawrence, particularly Massachusetts Street, is one of the city’s main attractions with its lively collection of restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and boutiques, and music venues, not to mention its well-preserved historic architecture. The area also touts a significant number of art galleries and on select Friday nights throughout the year, many of them stay open late for the Downtown Lawrence Gallery Walks, which offers a special tour of the city’s finest exhibits by local and non-local artists.

Many of the exciting cultural attractions and activities that can be found in Lawrence are contributions of the University of Kansas and the Haskell Indian Nations University. The University of Kansas campus is home to the highly acclaimed Spencer Museum of Art, which has been ranked as one of the nation’s top 10 college art museums, as well as the KU Natural History Museum. Also, the Lied Center located on the KU campus is the city’s premier performance arts venue with productions that range from opera to Broadway. The Haskell Indian Nations University enrolls approximately 1,000 students who represent 150 tribes and 50 states, and houses the Haskell Cultural Center, a museum and archive that serves as a major learning center for those interested in Native American studies. Haskell University also boasts the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame, which recognizes prominent Native American athletes such as Jim Thorpe and Billy Mills. Both schools offer excellent athletics programs that involve the community; whether it’s the Haskell Fighting Indians or the KU Jayhawks on the field and court, Lawrence residents have plenty of reason to stand up and cheer.
