The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park with access to both the Canal and the Potomac River is the only place in town to see summer's beauty from a mule-powered historic barge. The canal operated from 1828-1924 as a transportation route, carrying coal from western Maryland to the port of Georgetown in Washington, D.C. Year after year millions of visitors come to bike and hike the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal to enjoy the cultural and leisure opportunities offered.
Glen Echo Historic Park
Glen Echo Historic Park is one of the Washington area's local treasures. The park includes a spin on the hand-carved and hand-painted Dentzel carousel, Adventure Theatre, the mysterious Chautauqua Tower and the period ballroom open for public dances on weekends.
White's Ferry
White's Ferry is the last working ferry on the Potomac River. White's Ferry takes sightseers and commuters into Virginia, and the Gaithersburg B&O Train Station, whose heyday spanned 1875-1899, remains in use for commuters from as far away as West Virginia. The ferry crossing is the closest river crossing above the Capital Beltway in metropolitan Washington. When the Beltway is crowded, various drivers choose to take the historic ferry to cross the river.
Rock Creek Park
The 1755-acre Rock Creek Park originates in Washington, DC, following the course of Rock Creek into Montgomery County where it spawns parks and lakes along its path. Our country's history resides within this park. Visitors walk in the footsteps of the Piscataway Indians, the Old Stone House attests to a time when Washington, D.C. was a new capital, and Civil War remnants reveal stories of unrest. Rock Creek Park delivers memories of the past while creating fresh memories for the future.
Brookside Gardens & The Woodend Sanctuary
Brookside Gardens, Montgomery County's award-winning 50-acre public display garden and conservatory and the Audubon Society's 40-acre Woodend Sanctuary offer solace to man and creatures alike. The Woodend mansion, on the National Historical Register, is one of the few grand old estates still left in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
