Takoma Park, a commuter suburb, is located just over the Maryland border in Montgomery County. It is not to be confused with the D.C. community known as Takoma. Rather, it’s a planned community that dates back to the late 1800s and is currently home to more than 17,000 residents. The city is known for its relaxed West Coast vibe; Takoma Park real estate owners tend to be young families and rising professionals who enjoy the suburb’s eclectic, small-town atmosphere.
Takoma real estate is divided into six distinct districts, which are each made up of a number of neighborhoods. Long Branch-Sligo, for instance, comprises 250 homes, while Old Town is represented by the Old Town Residents’ Association. These neighborhoods are served by four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school, although Takoma Park’s youths also have the option of attending four other county high schools as part of a Downcounty Consortium. Takoma Park real estate owners take great pride in the city’s heritage. The suburb boasts an active civic community, manifested by such organizations as Historic Takoma and the Takoma Foundation. And the city’s calendar of events is packed with such family-friendly events as the Takoma Park Film Festival and the Takoma Park Folk Festival, a popular live music celebration attended by Takoma Park real estate owners and visitors alike.
