Welcome to Mineral County, WV

Mineral County is located in the state’s Potomac Highlands region. It was founded in 1866, shortly after the state itself was formed; thus, it is considered one of West Virginia’s youngest counties. Thanks to the Allegheny Front, whose northern terminus is in Mineral County, the region is characterized by an unparalleled beauty comprising a scenic mix of peaks, valleys, and rivers. Contained within these formations are the valuable natural resources that gave Mineral County its name. Today, however, the economy is less reliant on mining, and the county’s future growth is overseen by the Mineral County Development Authority and the Mineral County Chamber of Commerce. Two industrial parks also call the county home, although many of the area’s 30,000 residents commute to nearby employment centers courtesy of Amtrak, the Maryland Area Rail Commuter, and several major highways.

Keyser is the seat of Mineral County and is home to roughly 5,303 residents. It joins four other incorporated municipalities located here: Ridgeley, Elk Garden, Carpendale, and Piedmont. These towns, and the county as a whole, are especially popular among outdoor enthusiasts, who relocate here to enjoy the surrounding unspoiled, rustic charm. The county’s parks include 365-acre Larenim Park and the Barnum Whitewater Area, a 40-acre swath boasting one mile of frontage along the Potomac River. But families are just as attracted to this bucolic county, which is served by two high schools and two colleges.
