Welcome to Berrien Springs, MI

Berrien Springs, Michigan, received its namesake from John M. Berrien, a U.S. Senator and Attorney General serving under President Andrew Jackson. In 1832 the village became known as Berrien. After the discovery of mineral springs in the area, the name officially changed to Berrien Springs in 1836. The last recorded population number is just under 2,000.

Since the initial colonization of Berrien Springs, the village has been a successful rustic agricultural community with many industrial entrepreneurs. Farming, tourism and manufacturing are the leading industries. The village is located near a long stretch of beaches, camping resorts, eight parks and many more attractions. Serious sportsmen know the area as one of the best fishing spots in the state, priding itself in its abundant supply of Steelhead, Chinook, Coho and Bass. Also, Berrien Springs is uniquely famously for being known as the “Christmas Pickle Capital of the World” and hosts their Christmas Pickle Festival in early December each year.

Berrien Springs is home to Andrews University, which used to be called Emmanuel Missionary College—a Seventh-Day Adventist institution—in 1901. There are also seven other universities and colleges located nearby, such as Lake Michigan College, Southwestern Michigan College and Western Michigan University.
