Liberty began as a frontier trading post on the Missouri River in 1822 and has grown into a prosperous center of commerce and cultural activities. Liberty is the county seat for Clay County so it benefits from a stately Courthouse as a center point of the historic square. A square that celebrates the recollections of Jesse James and his gang’s famous ride through town to today’s modern assortment of restaurants, unique shops and businesses. There are 5 local historic districts surrounding the square, and many buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Liberty has thriving businesses with an excellent quality of life, opportunities for recreation and friendly welcoming neighborhoods.
