The city of Jackson was founded in 1821 in honor of Major General Andrew Jackson. A city with beautiful landscaping of old pine trees, blooming azaleas, daylilies and magnolias in the springtime and camellias in the winter, it is known as the "Crossroads of the South."
The Downtown area has undergone a wonderful transition - office buildings converted to condos and lofts, restoration of the Old Capitol Museum and King Edward Hotel, and the proposed upscale design in northeast Jackson of the Deaf and Blind School to condos, homes and retail shops. Neighborhoods have continued trends in the updating of established areas and the popularity of these areas has seen new growth emerging - Belhaven, Fondren, Woodland Hills, and Eastover have kept their values throughout the years. Belhaven's Association has created the Saturday Summer Market Days and Fondren is emerging as the arts and antique district - even converting an elementary school into retail shops, offices and an upscale restaurant, The Auditorium!
Historic landmarks dot this area including the Governor's Mansion, the second oldest in the U.S. and designated on the National Historic Landmarks and a fine example of the Greek Revival. A lifestyle of convenience describes living in Jackson best - hospitals, medical centers, cultural museums and events within the downtown center are all drawing points. The Natural Science Museum and the Children’s Museum (Fall '10) have added an element of excitement to this city! The Museum of Art, the Planetarium (the nation's 10th largest), Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, The Mississippi Opera, New Stage Theatre, Broadway's Best Series of Shows and Millsaps Art and Lecture Series have scheduled affairs throughout the year. Another plus is the Eudora Welty Museum with tours of her Tudor Home and garden. "The Battle of the Bands" (college competition in the Fall), Viking PGA Golf Tournament, Sports Hall of Fame Museum, CelticFest, Festival Latino, Jubilee!Jam, Mals St. Paddy's Parade, and the USA International Ballet Competition (in association with Bulgaria, Moscow, and Tokyo) add to the "happenings" in Jackson. The River Hills Tennis and Swim Club (long association with US Tennis), Jackson Country Club and Colonial Country Club represent clubs in NE Jackson.
Several TOP private schools make Jackson their home: First Presbytarian Day School, Jackson Academy Prep, St. Andrew's Lower School, St. Richards Lower School, Hillcrest Christian School. Colleges located in Jackson: Belhaven, Millsaps, Mississippi College of Law, Jackson State, Hinds Jr., Tougaloo and The University of Mississippi Medical and Dental School.
