Things To Do In Marietta

Marietta, Georgia is packed full of things to do, especially if American history is of interest to you. Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, the Marietta National Cemetery, and the Marietta Confederate Cemetery are all must-see attractions to explore. The town is also home to a number of museums, including a Museum of History and a Museum of Art.

What makes Marietta, Georgia so appealing is variety and proximity. Many sights are located in the heart of the city, within walking distance of the town square. In fact, hours could be spent just in Marietta Square itself, a multi-acre tract of land once home to the Cobb County Courthouse before it burned to the ground. Today, Marietta Square features a welcome center, playground, concert stage, and a replica of the Liberty Bell. In addition, it hosts a number of festivals each year, including the annual Marietta Antique Show.

Time spent in Marietta wouldn't be complete without visiting perhaps its most whimsical attraction, affectionately known as the Big Chicken. The Big Chicken is just what its name implies: a large chicken standing 56-feet high and crafted out of metal. Originally a means of attracting customers to Johnny Reb's diner, the Big Chicken now serves as a sign for Kentucky Fried Chicken. In 1993, the Big Chicken was restored to its original condition, complete with a beak that opens and closes and eyes with rotating pupils.

Of course, if you're looking for a unique dining experience, KFC may not be your first choice. Thankfully, many restaurants punctuate the downtown core, and Harry's Farmers Market is a must-see and must-eat destination. Home to many foods you know and even more you don't know, Harry's is a staple of Marietta for upscale eating and its legendary Harry's Cheesecake.
