Welcome to Memphis, TN
The city of Memphis is located in the southwest corner of Tennessee, along the banks of the Mississippi River, in a region that was once dominated by Chickasaw Indians. When Tennessee became a territory of the U.S. in 1790, and later a state in 1796, new settlers took over the area and in 1818, after much struggle, the Chickasaws surrendered. This paved the way for the development of the city of Memphis. General and former President Andrew Jackson, General James Winchester and Judge John Overton are credited with being the founders of Memphis, and together they saw to the design of the city. At that time, Memphis only had a population of about 50 people.
Today Memphis is the largest city in the state of Tennessee with a growing population of over 670,000, and a metropolitan population of over 1.2 million. The city is recognized world-wide as just “Memphis” because there really is only one true Memphis—it is the city where rock ‘n’ roll was born, and the blues were perfected. Memphis’ main attraction is its Beale Street, a historic strip of town dating back to the mid-19th century. Beale Street was all the rage for Memphians in the 1920’s—it offered the best nightlife in town, including clubs, theaters, restaurants, and hot music. Needless to say, much hasn’t changed. Although the area went through a period of decline in the mid-20th century, it was renovated in the 80’s, and now Beale Street is back up and running, filling the city of Memphis with life and music once again.
