Welcome to Miami, FLThe city of Miami is located in southeast Florida on the Miami River, between the Florida everglades and the Atlantic Ocean. Although the region had long been explored by Tequesta Indians and the Spanish, it did not see any permanent settlement until as recent as 1891, when the widow Julia Tuttle purchased 640 acres of land on the north bank of Miami River. Tuttle then convinced railroad builder Henry Flagler to extend his railroad into Miami, and the two laid out plans for a new town that included a fancy luxury hotel to attract newcomers. Only 5 years later, the city of Miami was incorporated. Even in its early days, Miami’s population was very diverse, and included a sundry of European and Central American, Bahamian and African American ethnicities. The Miami of the 21st century is no different; its current population of over 400,000 people is considered to be one of the most diverse in the world. Since the 1930’s, when the iconic Pan American Airways began the era of modern aviation, the city has been referred to as the “Gateway to the Americas,” alluring people from countries such as Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti, Honduras, and Puerto Rico. This has led to the exciting and culturally rich atmosphere that Miami is famous for today.
The city of Miami has seen its fair share of hard times since its incorporation, but its proud residents have always banded together to overcome these obstacles. In the wake of a near financial crisis in the 90’s, Miami has established several programs and has arranged the renovation and revitalization of the city in regards to its infrastructure and emergency preparedness, as well as the individual needs of its neighborhoods. The city of Miami recently established the “Quality of Life Task Force,” which addresses and remedies various neighborhood concerns from littering to crime prevention, and has already brought about security and peace of mind to many residents. Downtown Miami is currently undergoing major revitalization that includes new cultural attractions, restaurants and retail space, business centers, as well as attractive new residential construction. The city has grand plans for the future, with a $1.2 billion “Midtown Miami” project that will include commercial and residential development in the Wynwood area, and will be an economic cornerstone for the areas of Little Haiti, Overtown, Allapattah, and the Design District.
