Living in Middletown, PA

Today Middletown borough has a population of over 9,000 people, and prides itself on being a strong family oriented community with great schools and convenient access to institutions of higher education, such as Elizabethtown College and Penn State at Harrisburg. Middletown boasts a long list of attractions, both locally and in the nearby cities of Harrisburg and Philadelphia. Middletown offers convenient shopping and dining at national retail stores and locally owned shops and boutiques, as well as one of the oldest continually running movie theaters in the U.S.—the Elks Theatre. History buffs can find unlimited enjoyment at the region’s finely preserved historic landmarks and history museums. Middletown itself boasts eight structures that appear on the National Register of Historic Places, such as Old Fort/Ferry House on Union Street and the Frey Mill on Mill Street. One of the borough’s main historic attractions is the M&H Railroad, located at the Middletown station (est. 1891), which offers a scenic 11-mile round trip ride through the Swatara Creek Valley on 1920 vintage passenger coaches. Due to its beautiful setting near the Susquehanna River, Middletown residents enjoy a variety of outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. The Middletown Parks & Recreation Department maintains seven public parks and playgrounds, as well as various community sports programs for adults and youth alike.
