Welcome to Minneapolis, MNThe city of Minneapolis is located along the eastern state line of Minnesota, and is known as part of the Twin Cities with the nearby state capital of St. Paul. Because of its resourceful location near the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, the Minneapolis region was chosen for settlement first by the Dakota Sioux and then by French explorers, who explored the area as early as 1680. When the United States Army established Fort Snelling nearby in 1825, the region experienced an influx of growth, particularly after the Dakota natives sold their land to newcomers from the East Coast. The name of the new settlement was chosen by its first schoolmaster, who combined the Dakota word for water mni, with the Greek word for city polis. The new Minneapolis incorporated as a city in 1867, the same year that the railroad line extended there from Chicago. Minneapolis’ early economy prospered as its residents began to harvest the power of the Saint Anthony Falls on the Mississippi River to operate mills and facilitate manufacturing. Shortly after the city’s incorporation, it was home to 23 booming business, including flour, lumber, and cotton mills, paper production, iron works, and a railroad machine shop. Today Minneapolis’ economy continues to flourish, and is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle. Although milling still has its place in Minneapolis, the city’s current mainstays are commerce, finance, health care, and rail/trucking industries. The city’s wide selection of Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies have attracted national attention and brought Minneapolis into the forefront of major American cities. More than 380,000 people live and work in Minneapolis, and enjoy the city’s collection of cultural attractions, museums, galleries, unique restaurants and exciting sporting events that are open to the public every day. The natural setting of Minneapolis lends itself to outdoor recreation, featuring 20 lakes, creeks, waterfalls and lush park areas. Many of the city’s parks and lakes are linked by the Minneapolis’ unique Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, which is a corridor that takes a somewhat circular path through the city, and includes roads for scenic driving, as well as paths for walking, jogging, and biking.
