The History of Morrison, COThe town of Morrison was founded in the 1870s when Colorado Governor John Evans and a group of Denver businessmen established the Denver and South Park Railway that was to run through Morrison and support the gold mining industry to the west. Although the investors’ plans fell through and the railroad was never completed, its final stop was in Morrison, and the new community’s connection to Denver cemented its future as a town. While it ran, the railroad brought not only cargo, but also people, making Morrison an important supply center and gateway town for those in Bear Creek Valley and surrounding areas.
Just a few years after its founding, Morrison received national attention as the location of a major dinosaur discovery made by paleontologist Arthur Lakes. In 1877, Lakes found the remains of both the Stegosaurus armatus and Apatosaurus ajax in the Jurassic sedimentary rock in and around Morrison, which is now referred to as the “Morrison Formation.” Today the town is home to the Morrison Natural History Museum, which houses fossils found in the area and continues to research Arthur Lakes’ original work.
