Aquone, NC is an unincorporated community of Macon County located in the Smoky Mountains, 93 miles west of Asheville. Aptly named after the Cherokee word for “where the streams meet,” the original Aquone now rests under the deep waters of Lake Nantahala, which was created in 1941 in order to provide power for an East Tennessee aluminum power plant. Prior to damming the Nantahala River, Aquone’s homes, businesses, and cemetery were diligently relocated north, and now Lake Nantahala (also referred to as Aquone Lake) exists as one of the area’s alluring features, drawing visitors and residents from afar.
