This quant mountain village has approximately 1,425 permanent year-round residents and approximately 8,000 summer residents. The town got its name from the famous “Blowing Rock” where Indian legend says a young Cherokee brave, seeing danger in the sky and being torn between duty and love, leaped from the rock only to have the wind blow him back into the arms of his maiden lover. The natural topography of this rock cliff creates strong winds that at times can make it seem like it’s “snowing upside down.”
