Charlotte, North Carolina is a captivating city, dubbed as the “Queen City,” it offers more than some cities twice its size. Truly a diamond of the southeast, Charlotte is located on the North Carolina-South Carolina border and within a 2 hour plane ride of 55% of the nation's population and a 3 hour drive to the coast. This convenience in location is raising Charlotte's airports to the busiest in the nation with over 500 flights daily and raising its population by the tens of thousands every year.
Rich in history and significance beginning with Charlotte's first settling in 1755 by Thomas Polk, this metropolitan city has been on the move since its beginnings. Some moments in time of historical note include the pestering of General Cornwallis during the Revolutionary War by local Charlotteans, thereby birthing the city's 2nd oldest nickname “the Hornet's Nest,” and the founding of the United States' first gold by a young man of Charlotte, starting the first gold rush in history, resulting in a massive growth in population, and the subsequent founding of the Charlotte Mint which now houses the Mint Museum of Art. This leap in population was followed about one hundred years later with the opening of a cotton-processing center around the time after the Civil War, causing more people to call Charlotte home. This trend has continued over the years, with definite significance around the merging and acquiescing of Hugh McColl into what is now known as Bank of America, as well as the development and growth of Wachovia, both of which are hubbed in Charlotte.
