The year round population of the Highlands area is about 4,500, however in the summer the area increases to over 15,000 folks. The cultural amenities during the summer season include professional live theatre, chamber music concerts, cabarets and other special events. A variety of educational classes and seminars are available as well. In addition, a new visual arts and learning center attracts artists from all over the southeast.

Long noted for its fine dining, the community also offers unique shopping, with specialty gift and clothing boutiques, antique and art galleries, fine jewelry and custom furniture. Opportunities abound for home ownership on the Highlands Plateau.
