West Jefferson is at the heart of Ashe County, NC, both geographically and as the focal point for activities in the area. With just over 1000 residents, the town of West Jefferson is a lovely, still slightly sleepy small mountain town with a very walk-able downtown, filled with restaurants, shops, galleries and services.
West Jefferson is at the center, too, of a thriving arts community. Ashe County has long been a haven for artists who organized the Ashe County Arts Council with a mission to support the arts. A favorite among the many events they sponsor is the monthly “Gallery Crawl”, when the art related businesses stay open late, offering wine and hors d'oeuvres as visitors stroll the town from one gallery to the next. Music is also central to the Ashe County Arts Council mission with residents and visitors enjoying a diversity of musical treats throughout the year. Theater is alive and well with the Ashe County Little Theater. You might be surprised to learn how many of your neighbors have a flair for the stage. There are too many treats to describe, but take our word for it – if you have an interest, it is highly likely you’ll find a group of others who share it.
West Jefferson is home to a super Wal-mart and a Lowes Home Improvement store. Between these stores and the many small businesses you’ll find most of your shopping needs are met. Downtown West Jefferson is home to a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a skating rink, too. Nearby is Mountainaire Golf Course, open to the public.
