Winston-Salem, NC- The Twin City

Located in the temperate Piedmont region of central North Carolina, Winston-Salem has a rich history. First settled by the Moravians in 1766, Salem merged with the town of Winston in 1913. A powerhouse of industry and banking, Winston-Salem was North Carolina’s most populous city in the first quarter of the 20th Century creating a thriving downtown, beautiful residential neighborhoods, schools, colleges, worship centers and hospitals.

Today, Winston-Salem is home to a diverse economy of medicine, technology, education, manufacturing, textiles and transportation. The area is served by major interstate highways, Piedmont Triad International Airport and a regional commuter network (PART). There are two major medical centers located in the city, as well as the Piedmont Triad Research Park, a center for biotech research, Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem State University, Salem College, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and Forsyth Technical Community College. There is a revitalized downtown with excellent restaurants, a vibrant arts district, apartments and condominiums.

Winston-Salem has a proud history of supporting the Arts. It is famous for pioneering the first Arts Council in the United States and is home to numerous top level museums including Reynolda House Museum, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Diggs Gallery, The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts and Old Salem, an open air museum depicting the lives of the Moravian settlers. Music plays an important role in life here with Piedmont Opera, the Symphony, Rock the Block…to name just a few options! An Art house movie theatre has just opened downtown and we are home to the RIVERRUN International Film Festival and the National Black Theatre Festival.

Winston-Salem offers excellent recreational options. Golf, a strong tennis community, a new downtown baseball stadium and close proximity to the North Carolina Mountains and Coast make Winston-Salem an excellent place to call home!
