Wall Township is an inland shore community located in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Situated just off the Atlantic Coast, with Shark River to the north and Manasquan River to the south, this beautiful river haven has long been traveled and settled by Natives—the Algonquin Lenni Lenape—and European explorers and traders, who began to arrive in the early 17th century. Once a part of Howell Township, Wall Township itself was not established until 1851, when an Act of the New Jersey Legislature separated the two areas in response to heavy petitioning by Township Committee members James Allgor, Robert Laird, M.D., Samuel Allen and Benjamin Pearce. The men chose the name “Wall” in honor of United States Senator Garret Dorset Wall, who had recently passed away in 1850. Having served in the War of 1812, Senator Wall was widely respected in his time, and although he was appointed governor of New Jersey, he declined the position and served as the United States Attorney for the State of New Jersey instead, and eventually became a United States Senator under Presidents Jackson and Van Buren. Wall Township in the 19th century mainly consisted of village settlements that thrived on farming and fishing, woodworking, metalsmithing, and other necessary trades. Business endeavors, such as James P. Allaire’s “The Howell Works” bog iron village and Marchese Guglielmo Marconi’s Wireless Telegraph Company—begun in 1822 and 1900 respectively—brought much regional and national attention to the area and helped contribute to its growth.
